PE

We are very proud to say that we achieved the Gold School Games Mark for PE and School Sport in 2018/19.

At St Giles’, all children have at least two hours of PE activity a week. PE is taught in Year 1 – 6 by our Sports coach Mrs Toni Johnson who has recently trained to be a sport’s specialist. She teaches a wide range of PE topics that is covered throughout the year. Through a two-year cycle children greatly develop their skills of the many different PE activities and sports including: Dance, Gymnastics, Football, Netball, Athletics and Games. All year groups participate in the daily mile. We use PE passport to support planning and assessment.

The children in years 1-6 are given the opportunity to use the Furzefield Leisure Centre weekly for swimming lessons. In addition, the children have the opportunity to attend various after school clubs, run by our specialist sports coach such as boys and girls Football and Netball, in order to enhance PE skills and to allow them to take part in competitive sports, entering local leagues and tournaments. We hold inter-house competitions such as cricket, table tennis and dodge ball. We are proud to be part of the Watford and Hertsmere School’s Sport Partnership. We also have a partnership with both Watford and Arsenal football clubs.

All children are encouraged to participate in setting themselves personal challenges on a termly basis for their own self improvement. We believe every child should be able to participate and have the opportunity to try sport no matter what their ability.

Year 6 pupils are chosen as sports ambassadors each year. They act as a voice for the pupils and attend school council meetings and brings children’s thought, comments and ideas. They help with sporting events and thank referees and hosts when we attend events.

We provide our children with opportunity to experience adventurous outdoor activities such as orienteering to develop skills in these areas.
